Assuming We Survive Slugs Through the Negativity In 'Make It Out Alive' Video

Adrian Estrella intended "Make It Out Alive," from his band Assuming We Survive's Chapters EP, and its accompanying video — premiering exclusively below — to offer a positive message. But, as the gritty, Fight Club-style clip makes clear, there's a lot of dark to slug through before finding even a hint of life.

But Estrella tells Billboard that's the way it's been for him throughout his life. "As a kid I grew up with, I guess, a lot of struggles with how my parents raised me," explains Estrella, who found solace in joining the U.S. Army as well as in music. "My dad was pretty abusive. My mom was pretty non-resistant. I felt I had to battle through life alone a lot. I wanted to show in the video the struggle of battling through your problems but holding the things that mean the most to you very dear, protecting those things with everything you have." In the clip those are represented by keys and a treasure chest — though suffice it to say that holding on to those is depicted as challenging.

"It's a never-ending cycle,” Estrella says. "It repeats itself over and over and over. Life is never going to be perfect. You’re going to have these battles, and you can let the negative beat you down or tech you a lesson and keep you going. For us, the band, it's the positivity thing; We understand life is negative. You’re gonna go through a lot of heartbreaks and bad things in life. But if you can find a way to see the positive in every negative situation, life gets easier. It's never going to be easy, but it makes it easier to navigate."

Estrella says that "Make It Out Alive" has resonated with the heavy rocking Southern California quartet's audiences. "It's one of the biggest responses we get," the singer notes. The group wraps up its current tour on Nov. 17 in Omaha, Neb. and Estrella predicts Assuming We Survive will make videos for some of Chapters' other songs, while it still has five other tracks it recorded during sessions for the EP. "I think there'll be lots of touring," Estrella says, "definitely recording another full-length (album) or at least another five songs and then releasing singles. We're definitely going to be releasing a lot of music."
