Elton John Says Criticism Over Taron Egerton Portraying a Gay Man in ‘Rocketman’ Is ‘Bulls—‘
Elton John is slamming the Rocketman haters.
After some criticism arose over Taron Egerton playing a gay man even though he’s straight, the legendary singer had one, crystal clear response. “That’s all bulls—, I’m sorry,” he told The Sun.
The actor has some on-screen love scenes in the film with co-star Richard Madden, who plays John’s manager and ex-boyfriend, John Reid. “If people don’t like it, review-wise, or it doesn’t make one dollar, it’s the movie I wanted to make and that’s all that counts,” John continued. “I can look back and say, ‘You know what, I love it. I can live with it.”
Egerton has previously spoken out about his same-sex love scenes. “For me, kissing a man onscreen is no less appealing than kissing a woman onscreen,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not in any way repulsed by the male form. It’s an uncomfortable thing regardless of who you’re with.”
Rocketman hits theaters May 31.
