Wondering who’s that beautiful, sultry looking woman with a yellow shawl draped around her black dress, pulled-back hair set off with a bright red flower and rose in hand depicted in today’s (Jan. 16) Google Doodle?

It’s Mexican actress and singer Katy Jurado, who today would have turned 94 years old (Jurado died in 2002). If you think Jurado looks like a femme fatale, you’re on point; she was known for playing precisely those characters on screen. Jurado will also look familiar to film buffs north of the border.

Her memorable roles include that of a Comanche woman in Broken Lance, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award in 1954, and that of Helen Ramirez in 1952’s High Noon, a part that won her a Golden Globe for best supporting actress.  A great beauty with piercing black eyes, Jurado acted alongside a veritable who’s who of Hollywood’s elite.

Here are seven more things to know about Katy Jurado:
1. Jurado was the first Latin American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award,  and the first Latin American actress to win a Golden Globe, for her supporting role in “High Noon.”
2. Only two other Mexican actresses, Salma Hayek and Adriana Barraza, have been nominated for Academy Awards since Jurado’s nod for “Broken Lance.”
3. Jurado also worked as a bullfight critic and was at a bullfight when John Wayne and director Budd Boetticher saw her for the first time. Boetticher would cast her in his 1951 film “Bullfighter and the Lady.”
4. Jurado was accused of being a communist during the McCarthy era.
5. Jurado worked alongside cinema greats, including Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Anthony Quinn and Marlon Brando.
6. Jurado’s second husband was actor Ernest Borgnine.
7. Jurado once said her true love was Western novelist Louis L’amour.
