Game of Thrones: What Happened to Ghost in the Battle of Winterfell
Warning! SPOILERS ahead for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3.
Game of Thrones season 8 “The Long Night” assembles almost every character for the Battle of Winterfell – even Jon’s direwolf, Ghost is ready to fight. But what happened to Ghost after he charges in to battle?
Game of Thrones‘ final season’s third episode features the biggest battle ever filmed for television, and what audiences were treated to in “The Long Night” does not disappoint. (Assuming viewers didn’t find the episode too dark to see.) As one of the longest episodes of the series, season 8 episode 3 spends its entire hour and 20 minute runtime on the Battle of Winterfell. First it slowly builds tension by showing the many different forces gathered to defend the castle, then it begins teasing the battle to come by having the Dothraki – armed with arahks that have been lit aflame by Melisandre – charging towards the Night King’s army of the dead. Both Jorah and Ghost join in the charge, but Game of Thrones only makes a point of showing that Jorah returns. What happens to Ghost?
After making that valiant charge against the Night King’s army, Ghost never reappears during Game of Thrones season 8, “The Long Night.” The most obvious conclusion, then, is that Ghost doesn’t survive that initial engagement. In fact, most who make that charge don’t survive seeing as only a handful of Dothraki return along with Jorah. If Ghost did die in that opening scene of the battle, then certainly most fans are going to be upset. Then again, the direwolf may have yet survived. This wouldn’t be the first time that Ghost simply hasn’t been around and there’s been no explanation as to why. In which case, Ghost’s fate likely won’t be revealed until the next episode of Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones season 8 continues Sunday, May 5 at 9:00pm on HBO.
