Earlier this week the world learned of the tragic passing of Mary Duggar.

The outpouring of affection from fans was not surprising, as the beloved mother of Jim Bob Duggar was a regular fixture on her family’s popular reality shows.

What was surprising, however, is the controversies that have erupted in the days since Mary’s passing.

For starters there was widespread consternation over the cause of Mary’s death.

The 78-year-old did not pass away from natural causes, as many initially assumed, but instead drowned under circumstances that remain mysterious to the public.

On top of that, a surprising debate is currently taking place over the manner in which some of the Duggar children have paid tribute to Mary.

It all started when Jill Duggar honored Mary’s memory with a lengthy blog post.

The informal eulogy was posted on Jill’s personal website, and fans were directed to it by a link on her Instagram page:

“Swipe up in my story or click the link in my bio ( to read the post. #grandmaduggar #rip#youaremissed,” Jill posted.

Followers who clicked the link were treated to Jill’s loving comments about her late grandmother.

“Grandma, you are greatly missed by all who knew you!” Jill wrote.

“She was a feisty, incredible woman who always took the time to talk about Jesus with everyone she knew!” the reality star continued.

“I know she was ready to check outta here and get her new body in heaven before the old one started giving her too much trouble! We miss you so much!”

Most of the comments on Jill’s social media accounts were of a kind and supportive nature.

But some fans took issue with the fact that Jill posted her tribute in a way that ensured she would be paid for each click.

“You know, I wished your family the best on your last post but Jill, using your dead grandmother for money is just disgusting,” wrote one commenter.

“You are [stooping] to a new low with this ‘link in bio!’ business.”

“You should be spending time with your father and the rest of your family, I’m sure your grandmother wouldn’t appreciate you monetizing her death,” remarked another fan, adding, “You should be ashamed.”

After receiving blowback for her initial remarks, the commenter continued:

“I don’t think you know how blogs work.

“She is literally being paid for every person that clicks on her link. Not only the click to her homepage but again when you click on the Memorial for her grandmother.

“I saw five ads on the one post about Grandma Duggar alone. She has the choice to add those advertisements or to keep them off there. She knows this sort of post will bring traffic to her.”

While it’s certainly true that Jill would receive income from the advertisements on her page, we don’t know what’s so surprising about a member of the Duggar family making money from the events of her personal life.

After all, it’s what every reality star does.

Obviously, we have no way of knowing what Mary Duggar would think of the situation.

But it’s easy to imagine exactly how she would feel about internet strangers putting words in her mouth in order to shame her grieving granddaughter.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
