K-Pop Girl Group Sistar to Disband After Final Single

The K-pop queens of summer are calling it quits, but having one last hurrah before they go.

Coming to an end after seven years together, Sistar announced on Tuesday (May 23) that the four members will go separate ways following a final single that they’ll put out later this month. After the release, Hyolyn, Soyou, Dasom, and Bora will go their own ways, pursuing individual careers after their contracts with Starship Entertainment comes to an end.

The quartet returned like clockwork each summer since their debut in June 2010 with the bubbly “Push Push.” They would go on to become one of South Korea’s most popular female acts, coming out with hit songs each summer. From the sultry tones of “Alone” and “Give It To Me” to the playfulness of “So Cool”–the first song to top the now-defunct K-Pop Hot 100 chart — and “Touch My Body,” Sistar’s songs epitomized the season, and their successes propelled them to major heights, including an appearance on Fox’s Family Guy in 2016.

Over the past few years, the foursome saw several singles and albums place on different Billboard charts. Last year, their June-release “I Like That” peaked at No. 4 on the World Digital Songs chart, while their album, Insane Love hit no. 7 on the World Albums chart. Sistar’s most recent single was last November’s “One More Day,” a collaboration with Giorgio Moroder that featured a LGBTQIA-focused music video, a rarity in the K-pop world.

Along with the news that they would be splitting, Starship Entertainment released a short video to commemorate the group’s career, reflecting on the meaning of “Sistar” via acrostic poem:

“S ee you again

I t’s not goodbye
S eparate ways we may go
T o achieve new dreams
A ll the memories together
R emember and cherish forever.”

The K-pop quartet will drop their final release on May 31, while their contract with Starship Entertainment is set to expire early next month.
