New Ghost Recon: Breakpoint Island Already Planned
Ghost Recon: Breakpoint takes place in the archipelago of the Auroa islands, and although the main setting is already bigger than the massive Wildlands rendition of Bolivia, the development team is already hard at work on adding a new Breakpoint island to the game post-launch. The news comes from Matthew Tomkinson, User Experience and Realization Director on the game.
Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is a reimagining of the series that will combine everything fans enjoyed about Wildlands with some new survival elements meant to throw veterans off. Breakpoint will feature the Ghosts at their most vulnerable, absent the intel that has come to define each mission in the series up until this point and equipped with the bare minimum to survive a hostile environment. Ghost Recon: Breakpoint will also introduce a main villain in the form of Cole D. Walker, a character who will be familiar to those who played Wildlands DLC recently. Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as the newly-turned antagonist, leading a squad of highly-trained professionals in an effort to usurp an island full of war-mongering tech.
That’s all going to take place during the game’s main campaign, which will take place in the archipelago available to players at the beginning of the game. According to Tomkinson, however, the development team is already working on a planned post-launch new Ghost Recon: Breakpoint island that will be introduced at a later date. During an interview with Screen Rant at a hands-on preview event, Tomkinson had this to say when asked about whether new islands would be added over the game’s life cycle:
“Yeah. I don’t know if we are supposed to talk about it, but yes, we are already planning a new island. No, no, but I am saying that and you’ll understand when you open your map that we tease about very big new content here. Already it will be huge at the start, but yeah, there will be much more to come.”
Obviously, it’s not a surprise to discover that Ubisoft plans to add more content to the successor to Ghost Recon: Wildlands — that title had a full 19 content updates over its life cycle, with the last one tying it directly into its sequel. What is interesting is that Ubisoft is already planning out what that island will look like, a full five months prior to the game’s release date.
That would indicate Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is already far into development, and should excite fans of the series — it doesn’t seem like Ubisoft would already be planning additional content if the company weren’t happy with where Breakpoint is currently. If there isn’t a scramble to finish the game occurring behind the scenes, as Tomkinson’s quote seems to indicate, then Breakpoint is at a good place leading up to its launch, and will also have new Ghost Recon: Breakpoint islands planned for its future already as a result.
