New Rise of Skywalker Video Compares Sequel Trio To Luke, Han & Leia

A new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker video explores the dynamic between the main cast members, comparing it to Luke, Han, and Leia from the original trilogy. One of The Rise of Skywalker’s biggest selling points is at long last the sequel trilogy trio of Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron are embarking on a mission together. In the previous installments, Finn had individual adventures with his new companions, but Star Wars 9 marks the first time the three will be sharing screen time and playing off each other. Numerous marketing materials have underlined this element.

Some are disappointed it’s taken until the trilogy’s third entry to unite Rey, Finn, and Poe. While the decision to keep them all separated has allowed the characters to grow and go on tremendous journeys, it’s arguably robbed the modern films of developing anything close to the iconic Luke/Han/Leia trinity that carried the original movies. However, in the real world, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac have formed close friendships with each other, something that’s the focus of a new featurette.

Screening during the Star Wars panel today at CCXP in Brazil, the video takes a look at how the sequel trilogy’s principal cast became a tight-knit group during production – not just on Rise of Skywalker, but all the films. When speaking about Star Wars 9 in particular, Isaac says it’s similar to the “spirit of the original films.” Watch the featurette in the space below:

Even if the Rey/Finn/Poe team is coming much later than hoped for, it looks like The Rise of Skywalker is going to try its best to make up for lost time. It was very important to director J.J. Abrams that he brought the big three together for this final chapter, so it’ll be interesting to see what he came up with. Friendship is an important theme that runs through all the Star Wars films, and by sending his characters on a group mission, Abrams ensures that’ll be present in The Rise of Skywalker. It’s perhaps most exciting to finally get a chance to see Rey and Poe together. Ridley remarked this is the first time she’s “properly worked” with Isaac (that short scene at the end of The Last Jedi doesn’t count), but from the video it feels like she has much chemistry with Isaac as she does with Boyega.

The main sequel trio uniting is something even the cast has been looking forward to. After all the time the actors have spent together on long press tours, they’ve cultivated strong relationships and it should be a delight to see them play out on the screen. Ridley even admitted she missed working with Boyega during The Last Jedi, so she was probably very happy the two had an opportunity to build on their rapport from The Force Awakens and go on another adventure. Fans remain highly intrigued how Rey’s relationship with Kylo Ren will resolve, but it’ll be fun to see more of her with Finn and Poe in The Rise of Skywalker.
