Singer-songwriter Rachel Sage has a special connection to Ani DiFranco. The singer toured with the indie icon years ago, and now, she’s sharing her own emotional rendition of one of DiFranco’s classic hits.

On Friday (Jan. 10), Sage released her cover of DiFranco’s “Both Hands” under the indie label she founded, MPress Records. Gone is DiFranco’s skittering acoustic guitar sound, replaced instead by a string quartet, matching Sage’s breathy, gorgeous voice for a fresh new take on the classic song.

In a statement released alongside the song, Sage revealed that the song was one of many that helped her during a series of cancer treatments throughout 2018, and was one of the songs she first started playing once. “‘Both Hands’ was the very first song I ever heard by Ani DiFranco while I was in college – so it’s been an ear-worm in my head for decades. While I don’t typically do covers, it was one of the first tunes to find its way back to my fingers on the guitar during my cancer recovery,” she said. “There’s a kind of kinetic rhythm to it propelling the story forward to its inevitable conclusion, which is definitely how I felt during the past year with respect to certain changes I’ve made in my life that have ultimately allowed me to heal.”

The new cover is from Sage’s upcoming new album Character (due March 6). Check out Sage’s cover of “Both Hands” below:
