The 1975 Land Third U.K. No. 1 Album With 'Brief Inquiry'
The 1975 secure their third consecutive U.K. No. 1 album, as A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships (Dirty Hit/Polydor/Universal) enters at the top. Ariana Grande makes it five weeks at the singles summit with “Thank U, Next” (Republic/ Universal).
The success of The 1975's new set makes them the first British band since Arctic Monkeys to debut at No. 1 in the U.K. with their first three albums. A Brief Inquiry... had combined units of 50,000, including more than 8,000 on vinyl. They previously triumphed with their self-titled 2013 debut and 2016's I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It.
The new album chart saw the soundtrack of The Greatest Showman (Atlantic/Warner) climbing 3-2, changing places with Michael Bublé's Love (Reprise/Warner Music). George Ezra's Staying At Tamara's (Columbia/Sony) climbs again 9-4, following his performance on last weekend's X Factor final. Last week's newcomer at No. 1, Take That's Odyssey (Polydor/Universal), is down to No. 5.
Michael Bublé has a second top ten title as his perennial Christmas (Reprise) jumps back 16-7. Buddy Holly's True Love Ways (Decca/Universal), featuring his classic hits in new arrangements with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, climbs 12-10. That's the late rock 'n' roller's first time in the U.K. album top ten since Words Of Love in 1993.
Grande records a weekly streaming total of 14.9 million, according to the Official Charts Company, a new record which included 7.9m from its video. The previous highest streaming tally was Ed Sheeran's 14.2m for "Shape Of You." It's a decade since a female artist matched Grande's five weeks at No. 1, since Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" in 2008.
Ava Max climbs 6-2 with “Sweet But Psycho” (Atlantic/Warner) and Halsey's “Without Me” (Capitol/Universal) 4-3. The highest new entry of the week, at No. 4, is “The Power Of Love” (Syco Music/Sony) by the newly-crowned X Factor winner Dalton Harris, whose track features the talent show's 2012 victor James Arthur.
As the Christmas singles race hots up, Mariah Carey's “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (Columbia) again leads the way with a 34-6 climb. James Arthur has his own new top ten single, jumping 17-8 with “Rewrite The Stars” (Atlantic/Warner), with Anne-Marie. 6Ix9ine climbs 38-9 with “Kika” (Tenthousand Projects), featuring Kika, while Mark Ronson's collaboration with Miley Cyrus, “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart” (Columbia/Sony), arrives at No. 10.
Two further festive recurrents make the top 20, with Wham's “Last Christmas” (RCA/Sony) racing 52-14 and “Fairytale Of New York” (Warner Bros.) by the Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl moving 66-18.
