Captain Marvel Early Reactions: An Epic, Nostalgic Blast

Early reactions for Captain Marvel are beginning to roll out, and the overall response is exciting to say the least. With a heavy focus on ’90s nostalgia and Carol Danvers’ unparalleled strength, there appears to be plenty to love in Marvel Studios’ latest film.

It’s taken the Marvel Cinematic Universe 20 films before they finally released their first female-led standalone movie. And, though it’s no doubt been a long time coming, critics are finally tuning in to to see whether or not the long delay has been worth their wait. Between the Captain Marvel’s non-linear origin story makeup, serious secrecy shrouding the identity of the film’s villain, and the unexpected ’90s setting, the intrigue surrounding this film was palpable. Now, near the end of the MCU’s Phase 3Captain Marvel has finally arrived.

The first reactions of Captain Marvel are here, and the overall response is positive. With the main focus narrowing in on the film’s balance of ’90s nostalgia, well-placed comedy, unique storytelling, and how it honors the Captain Marvel comics, critics have nothing but praise for the MCU’s newest hero. To find out exactly what the critics are saying, enjoy these SPOILER-FREE early reactions.

Unfortunately, some fans have been trolling Captain Marvel with negativity ever since it was announced. And, regardless of how successful the film or may not have turned out, some have even gone so far as to post negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes well before screenings for the film had ever taken place. So, no matter how well-received the movie is – whether by critics, fans, or casual viewers alike – there are some people unwilling to accept the fact that a woman can lead a superhero movie.

From the get-go, it was clear that Captain Marvel would not be your ordinary superhero movie. Aside from checking off the necessary boxes – existing within the MCU, a logo-emblazoned super suit, and, of course, superpowers – it did what other recent films within the MCU have also done by trying its hand at breaking the mold. Instead of existing solely within the “superhero” genre, the MCU has stretched its creative limbs. For example, Spider-Man: Homecoming is an ’80s-style movie inspired by John Hughes’ “Brat Pack,” Thor: Ragnarok is a sci-fi comedy, and Captain America: Winter Soldier is a political thriller. And, even though Marvel Studios’ approach to Captain Marvel may have been a gamble, it appears to have been worth the effort.
