How TikTok Breathed Life Into a Mariah Carey Hit With the #ObsessedChallenge
Mariah Carey’s 2009 smash hit “Obsessed” stirred the pot upon release after the music video showed the songstress dressed eerily similar to rumored fling Eminem, who hinted at a relationship between the two in his 2002 song “Superman.” Reports assumed the tune and its video were throwing shade to the rapper, especially after he retaliated with “The Warning.”
Eventually the world forgot about the unlikely Carey-Eminem feud, and the song also faded from popularity with it. But now, ten years later, “Obsessed” has a new life thanks to the social media app TikTok, where users can create videos to various songs.
The frenzy began with user @Reesehardy7, who posted a clip of herself sobbing while performing full choreography to “Obsessed,” which prompted endless comments, memes and even a response from Carey herself.

But it didn’t stop there. The viral moment led to thousands of other users recreating the clip, and the #ObsessedChallenge was born. Most of the videos don’t feature the same emotional layer as the original, but teens put their own spin on the choreography and upload it to the app.
The dance challenge became so popular that it grabbed the attention of Carey herself once more. On Thursday (Aug. 1), who gave the challenge a shot on the rainy streets of New York City after her car broke down en route to Camp Mariah. See it below.
