Brazilian singer IZA spoke with Billboard at the 2018 Latin Grammys Person of the Year Gala on Thursday (Nov. 15), chatting about Maná, her Latin Grammy nomination and more.
Asked about her favorite memories of Maná, who were being honored as Person of the Year at the event, IZA tells Billboard that she first heard of them in Brazil, noting that they have a lot of soap operas there, and she heard Maná’s music playing on one.
“What I love the most is not only their music, but all the charity work the guys do,” she says. “I think that’s really beautiful when you can put together the things that you love the most to do with trying to do good for the people.”
IZA also talks about her Latin Grammy nomination for her album Dona de Mim. Asked where she was when she found out that she was nominated, the singer reveals that she was getting off of a plane in Rio, where she lives. Her phone rang, and it was someone from her label telling her the news.
“That was crazy,” she says. “I was literally on the ground, just crying for happiness because this is absolutely a dream coming true.”
IZA is also asked which artists she would love to one day collaborate with, to which she names a few artists including Shakira. “Why not dream a little bit more and say Shakira,” she replies. “I love her!”
